October is National Bullying Prevention Month

The leaves are changing colors and the chill of Fall is in the air.  October is here and school is once again in full swing!  Each year, the month of October is dedicated to raising awareness of bullying prevention through school events, activities, outreach and education.

As an extension of their Girl Scouts service learning, my own children have decided to partner with the guidance department at their school to put an end to bullying.  The idea to form an alliance began early this summer as the girls of Troop 3763 read a chapter book titled, “The Bully.”  As the literary circles delved deeper into the book, discussions centered around bullying behaviors that had either been displayed by or experienced by fellow troops.  This proved to be a learning experience for all involved both young and old.

Eventually there was a call to action and the girls started planning how to assist with this pandemic.  The result is a school-wide poster campaign to raise awareness, and activities organized to put a stop to bullying.  Our community is being improved upon greatly because of the work of seven fifth grade girls!

I’m glad you are addresing this very important issue and raising awareness. Perhaps if more adults/role-models/leaders etc. did, it would not be the major problem that it is.
